20 quick questions built from this calculator's formula: work out results, predict what happens when an input changes, and work backward from an answer. Every answer comes with the working.

What this calculator does

Find out how long you've been married or together, down to the day. You also get the date of your next anniversary, the weekday it falls on and how many days are left. The page shows the traditional gift for that year, too.

Enter your wedding date, or the day your relationship began. The count starts from today, but you can choose any other date. A table lists your next big milestones, such as your 10th, 25th or 50th, with the date and weekday of each.

Where it's used

Why this math matters outside the classroom:

  • Planning a celebration. A couple married on June 20, 2015 counts 237 days from October 26, 2026 to their 12th anniversary.
  • Milestone parties. Families find the date and weekday of a parent's 25th or 50th wedding anniversary to plan a party.
  • Work anniversaries. Managers count the full years since each person's start date to recognize 5-year and 10-year milestones.
  • Calendar practice. Students add 11 years of 365 days and 3 leap days to get 4,018 days from June 20, 2015 to June 20, 2026.

How to use it

  1. Enter your wedding date or the date you got together.
  2. Leave "Counting from" as today, or change it to another date.
  3. Read your years together, then the exact years, months and days and the total number of days.
  4. Check your next anniversary and its traditional gift, then open the table for your upcoming milestone years.

What the inputs mean

Wedding or start date
The day you married or got together. It stays on your device and is never put in a shareable link.
Counting from
The date to count from. It starts as today's date where you are. It can't be earlier than the start date.

Formula and method

years together = the number of anniversaries reached by the counting-from date
months and days = what's left after the last anniversary, counting full months first
total days = counting-from date − start date
next anniversary = the start date's month and day in the next year it hasn't happened yet

Years together counts completed years only. You reach 11 years on your 11th anniversary, not before. The calculator then counts the full months since that anniversary, and then the days left over. This is the same way people state an age.

Moving forward a whole month keeps the same day of the month. If that day doesn't exist, the last day of the month is used. So one month after January 31 is February 28, or February 29 in a leap year.

The total is the number of days from the start date to the counting date. Each month's real length is used, and every February 29 in between counts.

If you married on February 29, that date only exists in leap years. In other years, this calculator puts your anniversary on February 28. Some couples use March 1 instead, and either choice is fine.

Worked example

A couple married on June 20, 2015. Today is Monday, October 26, 2026. How long have they been married, and what's next?

  1. Their 11th anniversary was June 20, 2026, so they've been married 11 full years.
  2. From June 20 to October 20 is 4 full months. From October 20 to October 26 is 6 days.
  3. Counting every day: 11 years of 365 days plus 3 leap days (2016, 2020 and 2024) is 4,018 days. Add the 128 days since June 20, 2026 for 4,146 days.
  4. Their 12th anniversary is June 20, 2027. That's 5 + 30 + 31 + 31 + 28 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 20 = 237 days away.
  5. 237 days is 33 weeks and 6 days. Six weekdays on from Monday is Sunday.
  6. The traditional 12th anniversary gift is silk or linen.

Result: They've been together 11 years (11 years, 4 months and 6 days, or 4,146 days). Their 12th anniversary is on Sunday, Jun 20, 2027, in 237 days. Next big milestone: their 15th, on Thursday, Jun 20, 2030.

Understanding the result

Years together is the number most people mean when they say how long they've been married.

The total days can be fun for marking a milestone, such as your 5,000th day together.

If the next anniversary says 0 days, it's today. Happy anniversary!

Many years have no traditional gift, such as the 16th through 19th. The page says so rather than making one up. Any gift that means something to you both works just as well.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Dates use today's standard (Gregorian) calendar.
  • A February 29 date is placed on February 28 in years without a February 29.
  • The start date itself isn't an anniversary. On that day, your 1st anniversary is a full year away.
  • The gift list is the common US traditional list. Gift lists vary, and these are traditions, not rules.
  • Gift lists differ from source to source and from country to country. Some years have two or more traditional choices. Where a common alternative exists, the page names it, for example "iron (some lists say sugar)".
  • There are also modern gift lists that differ from the traditional one. This page shows the traditional list only.
  • The time of day isn't used, and "today" comes from your device's date.

Frequently asked questions

How many years have we been married?

Enter your wedding date and leave the second date on today. The main result is your completed years. A couple married on June 20, 2015 has been married 11 years on October 26, 2026.

What is the traditional gift for our anniversary?

The page shows the gift for your next anniversary, and the table shows it for each upcoming milestone. For example, 1st is paper, 5th is wood, 10th is tin or aluminum, 25th is silver and 50th is gold.

Why does it say there's no traditional gift this year?

The traditional list covers years 1 to 15 and then mostly every fifth year, such as 20, 25 and 30. Years like the 16th or 23rd have no traditional gift. The calculator says so rather than inventing one.

We married on February 29. When is our anniversary?

In leap years, it's February 29. In other years, this calculator puts it on February 28 so it stays in February. Some couples prefer March 1, and that works just as well.

Can I use this for a dating or work anniversary?

Yes. Enter any start date, such as the day you met or started a job. The years, days and next date work the same way. The gift list is a wedding tradition, so you can skip it for other uses.

How this calculator is checked

Method: Gregorian calendar arithmetic: complete calendar months with end-of-month clamping, then remaining days; day counts from a proleptic Gregorian day number. Gift names from the common US traditional anniversary list. The calculation is covered by automated tests with known reference values and edge cases. Last updated 2026-10-26. Found a problem?
