What this calculator does
Find out when your dog's puppies are likely to arrive, and how far along she is today. A dog's pregnancy is short: about nine weeks from breeding to whelping, which is the birth of the puppies. The number you'll hear most is 63 days. But the birth can come anywhere from about 58 to 68 days after the breeding date. That's because a female can be mated before she ovulates (releases her eggs), and sperm can survive in her reproductive tract for several days.
Enter the breeding date, and the calculator gives the expected whelping date and the start and end of that usual window. It also shows how far along the pregnancy is today, or on any date you choose. It's a planning aid to help you set up a whelping area and book vet check-ups. It isn't a substitute for veterinary care.
Where it's used
Why this math matters outside the classroom:
- Whelping date. A dog bred on May 1 has an estimated whelping date 63 days later, on July 3.
- Range of dates. The usual 58 to 68 day range turns a single breeding date into an 11-day window to watch.
- Counting days. Students count days across month ends, since 63 days from June 25 runs through July and lands on August 27.
- Whelping preparations. Breeders set up a whelping area in the final weeks and schedule checkups with their vet.
- Tracking stages. Owners note which third of the pregnancy their dog is in and share the timeline with their vet.
How to use it
- Enter the breeding date. If she was mated more than once, use the first date.
- Leave the second date as today, or pick another date to see the stage then.
- Read the expected whelping date and the earliest and latest usual dates.
- Check the day count, week and stage, and the number of days left.
What the inputs mean
- Breeding date
- The date of mating or insemination. If your vet did hormone tests to time ovulation, that timing is more precise than the breeding date. It often gives a narrower window.
- Stage on this date
- The date to show the stage on. It starts as today's date in your device's time zone.
Formula and method
expected whelping date = breeding date + 63 days usual window = breeding date + 58 days to breeding date + 68 days days pregnant = chosen date − breeding date week of pregnancy = floor(days ÷ 7) + 1
"Floor" means round down to a whole number, so day 30 ÷ 7 = 4.3 becomes 4, which is week 5. Pregnancy length in dogs is remarkably steady, about 63 days, when it's counted from ovulation. The breeding date is a less exact starting point, because mating can happen several days before or after ovulation. Counting 63 days from breeding gives the middle of the range. Days 58 and 68 mark the usual earliest and latest dates.
The calculator counts whole calendar days. So it works across month ends, year ends and leap years, and time zones don't throw it off.
The stage is a simple way to get your bearings. Early pregnancy covers days 0 to 21, while the embryos travel to the uterus and implant, meaning they attach to its lining. Mid pregnancy is days 22 to 42. That's when a vet can often confirm the pregnancy, for example by ultrasound from around the end of the fourth week. Late pregnancy, days 43 to 57, brings fast growth of the puppies and a visibly larger abdomen. Days 58 to 68 are the whelping window.
Worked example
A dog was bred on September 18, 2026. When are the puppies due, and how far along is she on October 18, 2026?
- Expected whelping date: Sep 18, 2026 + 63 days = Friday, Nov 20, 2026.
- Usual window: day 58 is Sunday, Nov 15 and day 68 is Wednesday, Nov 25, 2026.
- On Oct 18, 2026 she is 30 days past breeding, which is week 5.
- Day 30 falls in mid pregnancy (days 22–42), with 33 days until the expected date.
Result: Puppies are expected around Friday, Nov 20, 2026, most likely between Nov 15 and Nov 25. On Oct 18 she is in mid pregnancy, 30 days along.
Understanding the result
Think of the expected date as the middle of a range, not a deadline. It's wise to be ready from about day 56 to 58, especially if the breeding date is the only timing you have.
If she goes past day 68, or seems to be having trouble during labour, contact a vet right away. A vet can also confirm the pregnancy, estimate how many puppies to expect and advise on food and care through each stage.
Not every mating leads to a pregnancy, and some dogs show signs of a false pregnancy. The calculator assumes a confirmed or likely pregnancy, and it can't tell the difference.
Assumptions and limitations
- Pregnancy is counted from the breeding date, with 63 days as the typical length and 58 to 68 days as the usual range.
- If there were several matings, the first date is used as the starting point.
- The stage boundaries are rough thirds of a 63-day pregnancy, plus the whelping window.
- Individual dogs, breeds and litter sizes vary. Some healthy births fall outside the window.
- The breeding date is only a rough marker of ovulation. Hormone testing by a vet gives more reliable timing.
- This calculator is for dogs only. Other animals have very different pregnancy lengths.
- It gives dates only. It doesn't check health or replace advice from a vet.
Frequently asked questions
How long are dogs pregnant?
About 63 days, or nine weeks, on average. Counted from the breeding date, the usual range is roughly 58 to 68 days. That's because the mating date alone can't tell you exactly when ovulation and fertilization happened.
Why is the window so wide?
Sperm can survive for several days, and a female may be mated before or after she ovulates. So the breeding date can be several days away from fertilization. Counted from ovulation, pregnancy length is much more consistent.
When can a vet confirm the pregnancy?
Vets commonly confirm pregnancy by ultrasound from around 25 to 30 days after breeding. Later on, they can use other methods, such as an X-ray to count puppies. Ask your vet which approach and timing suit your dog.
What should I do if she is past the window?
Contact a vet. Going well past the expected date can mean the dates were off. But it can also mean she needs attention, and only a vet can tell which.
How this calculator is checked
Method: Calendar arithmetic on the breeding date: typical canine gestation of 63 days, usual range 58–68 days from breeding; stage from days elapsed, using approximate thirds of pregnancy defined for this calculator. The calculation is covered by automated tests with known reference values and edge cases. Last updated 2026-10-18. Found a problem? Tell us.
