Step-by-step solution

  1. The official definition goes the other way: 1 in is exactly 0.0254 m

    1 in=0.0254 m
  2. So divide your meters by 0.0254 to get inches

    1 m0.0254=39.3700787402 in
  3. Or multiply by 39.3700787402 instead. It gives the same answer, because 1 ÷ 0.0254 ≈ 39.3700787402

    1 m×39.3700787402=39.3700787402 in

What this calculator does

Turn meters into inches, or inches into meters, with the exact factor. It is handy for things a little too big for a ruler but described in metric. Think fabric off the bolt, a doorway or window opening, a TV stand or a child's height chart. The meter is the SI base unit of length; the inch is the small US customary unit, one twelfth of a foot.

The exact link is 1 in = 0.0254 m. Inches to meters is a multiplication by 0.0254, and meters to inches is a division by 0.0254. Choose a direction and the calculator shows the factor alongside the answer.

Where it's used

Why this math matters outside the classroom:

  • Fabric widths. A 1.5 m wide bolt of fabric is about 59 in wide.
  • Bed frames. Shoppers buying a mattress for a 2 m bed frame find it is about 78.7 in long.
  • TV stands. Buyers checking whether a TV fits find a 1.2 m stand is about 47.2 in wide.
  • Rulers. Students convert a 0.5 m ruler to about 19.69 in.
  • Weather reports. A 0.3 m snowfall reported in metric is about 11.8 in.

How to use it

  1. Enter the length in meters or inches; decimals are fine.
  2. Choose meters → inches or inches → meters.
  3. Read the result, the working and the reference table.

What the inputs mean

Value to convert
A length in meters (m → in) or inches (in → m).
Direction
The unit you are converting from.

Formula and method

m = in × 0.0254
in = m ÷ 0.0254 ≈ m × 39.3700787402

In the formulas, m is the length in meters and in is the same length in inches. An inch is 2.54 cm, which is 0.0254 m. This has been exact since 1959.

The number of inches in a meter, 39.37007874…, repeats without end, so the calculator divides by 0.0254 for the meters-to-inches direction.

Worked example

How many inches are in one meter?

  1. Divide by the exact factor: 1 ÷ 0.0254.
  2. 1 ÷ 0.0254 = 39.3700787402…

Result: One meter is about 39.37 in, roughly 3 inches longer than a yardstick.

Understanding the result

Mental shortcut: a meter is about 40 inches. Using 40 overstates by 1.6%, so 2 m comes out at 80 in against the exact 78.74 in. For inches to meters, divide by 40 and add 1.6%.

Reference values: half a meter is 19.685 in; 1.2 m is 47.244 in, just under 4 ft; 1.5 m is 59.055 in; 2 m, roughly the height of a doorway, is 78.74 in. Going the other way, a 36-inch yardstick is exactly 0.9144 m and 40 in is 1.016 m.

Pitfall: you may see "1 meter = 39.37 inches" stated as exact. That was the old US legal definition, behind the now-retired US survey foot. Under the international inch the true value is 39.3700787…, larger by about 2 parts per million, which matters only in surveying.

Assumptions and limitations

  • The inch is the international inch, exactly 0.0254 m.
  • Values are lengths, not areas.
  • Results are decimal inches, not fractions such as 3/8.
  • For lengths in feet and inches, use the feet-to-meters page or divide the inches by 12 yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Is a meter longer than a yard?

Yes, by about 3.37 in. A meter is 39.37 in and a yard is 36 in.

How many meters is 100 inches?

Exactly 2.54 m.

Where does the 39.37 figure come from?

It was the US definition of the meter in inches from the late 1800s until 1959. It survives in the US survey foot (1200/3937 m) used for historical land records.

How this calculator is checked

Method: International yard and pound agreement (1959): 1 in = 0.0254 m exactly. The calculation is covered by automated tests with known reference values and edge cases. Last updated 2026-10-18. Found a problem? Tell us.
