What this calculator does
Turn US pints into milliliters, or milliliters back into pints, in one step. The pint is half a quart. In the US it's the size of a carton of ice cream or cream. In a British or Irish pub it's a glass of beer, and it's a common unit in older recipes on both sides of the Atlantic. The catch is that the American and British pints aren't the same size.
A US liquid pint is ⅛ of the 231-cubic-inch US gallon, which is exactly 473.176473 mL. It holds 16 US fluid ounces or 2 US cups. This page converts with that value. The imperial (British) pint, 568.26125 mL, is covered below.
Where it's used
Why this math matters outside the classroom:
- Pint glasses. A US pint glass holds about 473 mL, while a British pint holds about 568 mL.
- Ice cream. A pint carton of ice cream holds about 473 mL.
- Cream in recipes. A recipe calling for half a pint of cream needs about 237 mL.
- Metric bottles. Shoppers comparing drinks see that a 500 mL bottle is about 1.06 US pints.
- Pints and quarts. Students see that 2 pints make a quart, so a US quart is about 946 mL.

How to use it
- Enter a number of US pints or an amount in milliliters.
- Choose pints to milliliters, or milliliters to pints.
- Read the converted volume, check the working, and use the table for common sizes.
What the inputs mean
- Value to convert
- US liquid pints for pt → mL, or milliliters for mL → pt.
- Direction
- The unit of your number. The reference table turns around with it.
Formula and method
mL = US pt × 473.176473 US pt = mL ÷ 473.176473 1 US pt = 2 cups = 16 US fl oz
In the formulas, pt means US pints, mL means milliliters and fl oz means fluid ounces. A US gallon is 3,785.411784 mL, and it holds 8 pints. Dividing gives 473.176473 mL per pint. So pints to milliliters multiplies by that one exact number.
For milliliters to pints, the calculator divides by the same number. For example, 500 mL is 1.0567 US pints.
Worked example
A recipe calls for 1 pint of heavy cream. How much is that in milliliters?
- 1 US pt is exactly 473.176473 mL, so multiply: 1 × 473.176473.
- 1 × 473.176473 = 473.176473 mL.
Result: 1 US pint is about 473 mL, a little less than a 500 mL carton.
Understanding the result
Mental shortcut: a US pint is about 475 mL, which is within 0.4%. Calling it half a liter is quicker but 5.7% too large.
Familiar amounts: half a pint is a cup, 236.6 mL; 2 pints are a quart, 946.4 mL; 8 pints are a gallon, 3.785 L.
Watch out: a British pint is 568.26125 mL, about 20% bigger than a US pint. That's because it holds 20 imperial fluid ounces instead of 16 US ones. A recipe from the UK that asks for a pint of stock means about 568 mL, or 1.2 US pints.
Assumptions and limitations
- “Pint” means the US liquid pint, ⅛ of a US gallon.
- The imperial (UK) pint isn't an option here. Use the general volume converter to work with it.
- The US dry pint (about 550.6 mL), used for selling berries and other produce, is a different measure.
Frequently asked questions
How many mL are in a pint?
473.176473 mL in a US pint, exactly; 568.26125 mL in a UK (imperial) pint.
How many pints is 1 liter?
About 2.113 US pints, or about 1.76 imperial pints.
Is a pint of water a pound?
Roughly, in the US. 473 mL of water weighs about 473 g, or a little over 1.04 lb, so the old saying "a pint's a pound" is about 4% off. It does not hold for the larger imperial pint.
How this calculator is checked
Method: US liquid pint = ⅛ US gal = 28.875 in³ = 473.176473 mL exactly. The calculation is covered by automated tests with known reference values and edge cases. Last updated 2026-10-18. Found a problem? Tell us.
