What this calculator does
Find out how far your steps took you, or how many steps a walk will take. Step counts are easy to collect with a phone or pedometer, but a number like 10,000 steps means more once it is turned into a distance. The link between the two is your step length: the distance from one foot's heel strike to the next heel strike of the other foot. Multiply your steps by that length and you have the distance walked.
This calculator converts steps to miles or kilometers, or works backward from a distance to the number of steps. If you have not measured your step length, it estimates one from your height using a common rule of thumb. The estimate is approximate, so measuring your own step length gives a better answer.
Where it's used
Why this math matters outside the classroom:
- Daily step counts. With a 30-inch step, 10,000 steps cover 300,000 inches, which is about 4.73 miles.
- Estimating step length. A man 70 inches tall has an estimated step length of 0.415 × 70, which is about 29 inches.
- Measuring a stride. PE students walk 20 steps along a measured hallway and divide the distance by 20 to find their own step length.
- Walking challenges. Office walking challenges convert each team's step totals to miles to compare progress along a virtual route.
- Route planning. Walkers planning a 3-mile route work out roughly how many steps it will take at their own step length.

How to use it
- Choose whether to convert steps to distance or distance to steps, and pick miles or kilometers.
- Enter your step count, or the distance.
- Choose whether to estimate step length from height (enter sex and height) or enter a step length you have measured.
- Read the distance or step count, your step length, and the number of steps per kilometer and per mile.
What the inputs mean
- Steps
- Any whole number of steps. Zero gives zero distance.
- Step length
- The height estimate uses about 41.5% of height for men and 41.3% for women. It is a rough average and does not account for walking speed.
- Sex
- The published equations have separate versions for males and females.
Formula and method
step length = height × 0.415 (men) or × 0.413 (women) (rule of thumb) distance = steps × step length steps = distance ÷ step length 1 mile = 160,934.4 cm; 1 km = 100,000 cm
The height factors are a common rule of thumb for walking step length. They give a reasonable starting point but are not a measurement.
Heights and step lengths in inches are converted exactly with 1 in = 2.54 cm, and miles with 1 mile = 1.609344 km.
Steps per mile and per kilometer are the length of a mile or kilometer divided by your step length.
Worked example
A man 5 ft 7 in tall wants to know how far 10,000 steps takes him, using the height estimate.
- Height: 67 in × 2.54 = 170.18 cm.
- Step length: 0.415 × 170.18 = 70.62 cm (about 27.8 in).
- Steps per mile: 160,934.4 ÷ 70.62 = 2,278.7.
- Distance: 10,000 × 70.62 cm ÷ 160,934.4 = 4.388 miles.
Result: 10,000 steps is about 4.39 miles (7.06 km) at that estimated step length.
Understanding the result
Step length changes with speed: steps are longer when walking briskly and longer still when running. Use a step length measured at the pace you usually move.
Step counts from devices can include small movements that are not walking, which makes the distance estimate a little high.
For planning, a typical adult walking step works out to roughly 2,000 to 2,500 steps per mile, depending on height and pace.
Assumptions and limitations
- Every step has the same length.
- The height rule of thumb describes walking, not running.
- Unit conversions use the exact inch and mile definitions.
- The height estimate can be off by several centimeters for an individual.
- Hills, stairs and uneven ground shorten steps.
- This calculator does not estimate calories; use a calories-burned calculator for that.
Frequently asked questions
How many steps are in a mile?
It depends on step length. With a 70 cm (27.6 in) step, a mile is about 2,300 steps; with a 80 cm step, about 2,000. The calculator shows the figure for your own step length.
Is stride length the same as step length?
Not strictly. In gait analysis a stride is two steps (left plus right). Many fitness devices use stride to mean a single step, which is how this calculator uses the measurement.
How far is 10,000 steps?
For most adults, roughly 6.5 to 8 km (4 to 5 miles). Taller people and faster walkers cover more distance per step.
How this calculator is checked
Method: Distance = steps × step length; step length estimated as 0.415 × height (men) or 0.413 × height (women), a common rule of thumb; exact inch and mile definitions. The calculation is covered by automated tests with known reference values and edge cases. Last updated 2026-10-18. Found a problem? Tell us.
