What this calculator does
Find out how many days are left until Christmas Day. The count starts from today's date on your device, so it's always up to date when you open the page. You also get the same wait in weeks, hours and business days.
Christmas is always on December 25, so the only thing that changes is how far away it is. Once this year's Christmas has passed, the count moves to next year's. You can also pick any other start date to plan ahead.
Where it's used
Why this math matters outside the classroom:
- Family countdowns. Parents tell children there are 68 sleeps left on October 18, then cross one off each night.
- Gift planning. Shoppers with 9 weeks to go and 9 people to buy for plan to buy one gift each week.
- Shipping deadlines. Someone mailing a parcel that takes 5 business days counts back at least a full week from December 25.
- Classroom calendars. Teachers post the number of school days left before the winter break.
How to use it
- Leave the start date as today, or pick another day to count from.
- Tick the box if you want hours and minutes too, then enter the time now.
- Read the days left, then the weeks, hours and business days.
- Check the table to see which day of the week Christmas falls on in the next few years.
What the inputs mean
- Counting from
- This fills in with today's date from your device. Change it to see how many days there will be from a later day, such as the day you plan to start shopping.
- Count the hours and minutes too (to midnight as Christmas begins)
- Off, the count is in whole days. On, it counts to midnight at the very start of December 25, using the time you enter.
- Time now
- The time on your clock right now. The page doesn't read your clock, so enter it yourself.
Formula and method
days left = December 25 − start date (in whole calendar days) weeks and days = whole weeks of 7 + the days left over hours = days × 24 with a time: minutes left = days × 1,440 − minutes already gone today business days = days − Saturdays and Sundays in between
The calculator turns each date into a day number and subtracts one from the other. That takes care of month lengths and leap years for you. Today counts as day zero, so on Christmas Day the count is 0.
If you count the hours and minutes too, the target is midnight at the start of December 25. A day has 1,440 minutes (24 × 60). So the calculator turns the days into minutes, then takes away the minutes that have already gone by today.
Business days are Monday to Friday. Today counts if it's a weekday, but Christmas Day itself doesn't. Public holidays, such as Thanksgiving, aren't taken off.
Worked example
It's Sunday, October 18, 2026, and you want to know how long it is until Christmas.
- Days: 13 left in October + 30 in November + 25 in December = 68 days.
- Weeks: 68 = 9 × 7 + 5, so 9 weeks and 5 days.
- Hours: 68 × 24 = 1,632 hours.
- Business days: take away the 19 Saturdays and Sundays, which leaves 49.
- At 8:00 PM that evening: 68 × 1,440 − 1,200 = 96,720 minutes, or 67 days, 4 hours and 0 minutes.
Result: There are 68 days (9 weeks and 5 days) until Friday, December 25, 2026. That's 1,632 hours and 49 business days.
Understanding the result
The day count is the number of sleeps people talk about with children. If there are 3 days left, there are 3 nights to sleep before Christmas morning.
Use the business-day count for anything that ships. Many deliveries only move on weekdays, and delivery times are often quoted in business days. So if a package takes 5 business days, count back at least a full week from your deadline.
Give yourself a buffer in December. Shipping and stores get busier as Christmas gets closer, and delays are more common. Setting your own deadline a week or two early means a late package is less likely to spoil the day.
The weeks number helps with planning in chunks. For example, 9 weeks left could mean one gift a week for 9 people, or spreading a budget over 9 paychecks.
Assumptions and limitations
- Christmas is December 25 on the Gregorian calendar, the calendar in everyday use.
- Today's date comes from your device and its time zone.
- Days run midnight to midnight, and every day is counted as 24 hours.
- Business days are Monday to Friday, with no public holidays taken off.
- This is a snapshot, not a clock that ticks down. Open the page again or change the date to update it.
- If your device's date is wrong, the count will be wrong too.
- Daylight saving changes are ignored, so the hours can be off by one if a clock change falls in between.
- Some churches that follow the older Julian calendar celebrate Christmas on January 7 instead. This page counts to December 25.
Frequently asked questions
What day of the week is Christmas this year?
In 2026, Christmas Day is a Friday. Looking ahead, 2026 is a Friday, 2027 is a Saturday, 2028 is a Monday, 2029 is a Tuesday, 2030 is a Wednesday. The day of the week moves forward by one each year, or by two when a February 29 comes in between.
Why is Christmas on December 25?
December 25 has been the date for Christmas in Western churches for many centuries. Some Eastern Orthodox churches still use the older Julian calendar for church dates. On today's calendar, their December 25 falls on January 7.
Does the count include today?
No. Today is day zero and Christmas Day is the finish line. That matches how people say "3 days until Christmas" on December 22. If you want to count both today and Christmas Day, add 1.
What happens on December 26?
The count jumps to next year's Christmas. On December 26, 2026, for example, there are 364 days until Friday, December 25, 2027. On Christmas Day itself, the page shows 0 and tells you how long until the next one.
How can I count to Christmas Eve instead?
Take 1 away from the days shown. Christmas Eve is always the day before. You can also use the general countdown calculator with December 24 as the target date.
How this calculator is checked
Method: Calendar day difference on the proleptic Gregorian calendar to the next December 25 on or after the start date; weekday counting from a known reference date. The calculation is covered by automated tests with known reference values and edge cases. Last updated 2026-10-25. Found a problem? Tell us.
