What this calculator does
Find out how many days are left until the new year. The count starts from today's date on your device, so it's right whenever you open the page. It runs to January 1, the first day of the next year.
Want to know the hours and minutes until midnight on New Year's Eve? Tick the box and enter the time now. You also get the wait in weeks and business days, which helps if you're trying to finish something before the year ends.
Where it's used
Why this math matters outside the classroom:
- Year-end goals. A saver with 10 weeks left and $500 to put aside plans to save $50 each week.
- Party planning. Hosts count back 3 weeks from December 31 to know when to send invitations.
- Work deadlines. Teams with 54 business days left in the year split a project into 9 chunks of 6 days.
- Classroom math. Students count the days left in the year by adding the days left in each month.
How to use it
- Leave the start date as today, or pick another day to count from.
- To count to midnight, tick the box and enter the time now.
- Read the days left, then the weeks, hours and business days.
- Check the table to see which day of the week January 1 falls on in coming years.
What the inputs mean
- Counting from
- This fills in with today's date from your device. Change it to count from another day.
- Count the hours and minutes too (to midnight as New Year's Day begins)
- Off, the count is in whole days. On, it counts to midnight, the moment the new year begins, using the time you enter.
- Time now
- The time on your clock right now. The page doesn't read your clock, so enter it yourself.
Formula and method
days left = January 1 − start date (in whole calendar days) weeks and days = whole weeks of 7 + the days left over hours = days × 24 with a time: minutes left = days × 1,440 − minutes already gone today business days = days − Saturdays and Sundays in between
January 1 starts the year on the Gregorian calendar, the one most of the world uses for everyday dates. The calculator turns both dates into day numbers and subtracts them. Today counts as day zero, so on December 31 there's 1 day left.
With a time of day, the target is midnight. A day has 1,440 minutes (24 × 60). So the calculator turns the days into minutes, then takes away the minutes already gone today.
Business days are Monday to Friday. Today counts if it's a weekday, but January 1 doesn't. Other public holidays in between, such as Christmas, aren't taken off.
Worked example
It's Sunday, October 18, 2026, and you want to know how long is left in the year.
- Days: 13 left in October + 30 in November + 31 in December + 1 = 75 days.
- Weeks: 75 = 10 × 7 + 5, so 10 weeks and 5 days.
- Hours: 75 × 24 = 1,800 hours.
- Business days: take away the 21 Saturdays and Sundays, which leaves 54.
- At 11:00 PM on December 31: 1 × 1,440 − 1,380 = 60 minutes, or 0 days, 1 hour and 0 minutes.
Result: There are 75 days (10 weeks and 5 days) until Friday, January 1, 2027. That's 1,800 hours and 54 business days.
Understanding the result
The business-day number is the one to watch for anything that has to be done by year end, like a work project. Take off any days you plan to be away, plus holidays such as Christmas.
If you have a money goal for the new year, divide it by the weeks left. With 10 weeks to go, saving $500 means $50 a week. The savings goal calculator can help with longer plans.
Midnight comes at different moments around the world. This page counts to midnight on your own clock. If you're planning a call with someone far away, check their time zone too.
Planning a party? A few weeks out is a good time to send invitations, so guests can plan around their other holiday events.
Assumptions and limitations
- The new year starts at 12:00 AM on January 1, on the Gregorian calendar.
- Today's date comes from your device and its time zone.
- Days run midnight to midnight, and every day is counted as 24 hours.
- Business days are Monday to Friday, with no public holidays taken off.
- This is a snapshot, not a clock that ticks down. Open the page again to update it.
- If your device's date is wrong, the count will be wrong too.
- Daylight saving changes are ignored, so the hours can be off by one if a clock change falls in between.
- Some cultures also mark a new year on other dates, such as Lunar New Year in late January or February. This page counts to January 1.
