What this calculator does
Turn grams into pounds, or pounds into grams, so you can compare packages and recipes with ease. Grams are how metric packaging, baking recipes and postal scales outside the US report weight. Pounds are how American shoppers buy meat, produce, coffee and flour. This helps when you compare a 500 g bag with a 1 lb bag, or move a recipe from one system to the other.
The pound is exactly 453.59237 grams. To turn pounds into grams, you multiply by that number. To turn grams into pounds, you divide by it. The answer comes with the working, and a table lists common package sizes in both units.
Where it's used
Why this math matters outside the classroom:
- Grocery packs. A 500 g package of pasta is about 1.1 lb.
- Shipping. Online sellers see that a 2,268 g parcel is about 5 lb when looking up postage.
- Baking. A recipe calling for 1 lb of butter needs about 454 g on a metric scale.
- Pet food. A 15 lb bag of dog food holds about 6,804 g, or 6.8 kg.
- Science labs. Students convert a 250 g sample to about 0.551 lb when a problem asks for US units.

How to use it
- Type the weight, such as 500 g or 2.5 lb.
- Choose grams to pounds or pounds to grams.
- Check the result, the factor in the working, and the reference table for neighboring amounts.
What the inputs mean
- Value to convert
- A weight in grams (for g → lb) or in pounds (for lb → g).
- Direction
- Sets which unit you are entering and which unit you get back.
Formula and method
g = lb × 453.59237 lb = g ÷ 453.59237 ≈ g × 0.00220462262185
In the formulas, g is the weight in grams and lb is the weight in pounds.
A 1959 international agreement fixed the pound at 0.45359237 kg, which is 453.59237 g. That means pounds to grams is exact.
Grams to pounds divides by 453.59237. The equivalent multiplier, about 0.0022046 lb per gram, repeats forever, so the calculator divides by the exact value rather than rounding first.
Worked example
A pack of pasta is labeled 500 g. What is that in pounds?
- 1 lb = 453.59237 g, so divide: 500 ÷ 453.59237.
- 500 ÷ 453.59237 = 1.10231131092…
Result: 500 g is about 1.102 lb, or a little more than 1 lb 1½ oz.
Understanding the result
Mental shortcut: a pound is about 450 g. Dividing grams by 450 overstates the pounds by roughly 0.8%, so 900 g reads as 2 lb against an exact 1.98 lb. For pounds to grams, multiply by 450 and add 1%: 3 lb → 1,350 + 13.5 ≈ 1,364 g, close to the exact 1,360.78 g.
Shelf anchors: ¼ lb = 113.40 g; ½ lb = 226.80 g; 1 lb = 453.59 g; 1 kg = 2.205 lb. A 454 g package is the metric labeling of a one-pound product.
A decimal pound is not pounds and ounces. 1.10 lb is 1 lb plus 0.10 × 16 = 1.6 oz, not 1 lb 10 oz. To split a result, keep the whole pounds and multiply the decimal part by 16.
Assumptions and limitations
- Pounds are international avoirdupois pounds of exactly 453.59237 g.
- The result is a decimal pound; it is not split into pounds and ounces automatically.
- For very small amounts, such as milligrams of a spice, grams or ounces are more readable than pounds.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in a pound?
Exactly 453.59237 g. For cooking, 454 g is the usual rounded figure.
Is 500 g the same as a pound?
Not quite. 500 g is about 1.102 lb, roughly 10% more than a pound. Recipes that swap the two directly will be slightly off, which matters more in baking than in stews.
How do I compare prices per pound and per kilogram?
Divide the per-kilogram price by 2.20462 to get a per-pound price, or multiply a per-pound price by 2.20462 to get the per-kilogram price. A unit-price calculator can then compare packages directly.
How this calculator is checked
Method: International yard and pound agreement (1959): 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg = 453.59237 g exactly. The calculation is covered by automated tests with known reference values and edge cases. Last updated 2026-10-18. Found a problem? Tell us.
