Convert ounces to pounds or pounds to ounces using the exact 16-ounce pound, with the working and a reference table.

Level: Grades 4–5

  • Common Core standard 4.MD.A.1Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table.
  • Common Core standard 5.MD.A.1Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems.

Step-by-step solution

  1. The official definition goes the other way: 1 lb is exactly 16 oz

    1 lb=16 oz
  2. So divide your ounces by 16 to get pounds

    24 oz16=1.5 lb
  3. Or multiply by 0.0625 instead. It gives the same answer, because 1 ÷ 16 = 0.0625

    24 oz×0.0625=1.5 lb

What this calculator does

Turn ounces into pounds, or pounds into ounces, and see the working. Both are US customary units, and an ounce is one sixteenth of a pound. You'll meet the conversion all the time. A baby's birth weight is given as 7 lb 8 oz, and a package rate changes at 16 oz. A steak is sold in ounces next to ground beef sold by the pound. And some shipping scales only show one of the two.

There is no rounding involved, because a pound contains exactly 16 ounces. To go from ounces to pounds, divide by 16. To go from pounds to ounces, multiply by 16. This page does either and shows the step.

Where it's used

Why this math matters outside the classroom:

  • Produce. Grocery shoppers comparing unit prices see that a 40 oz bag of apples weighs 2.5 lb.
  • Birth weight. Parents reading a scale that shows 120 oz learn their baby weighs 7 lb 8 oz.
  • Shipping. Shippers turn a 70 oz package into 4 lb 6 oz.
  • Fishing. An angler's 28 oz trout is 1 lb 12 oz, or 1.75 lb.
  • Meat counters. Butchers cutting a 3 lb roast into 8 oz portions see it is 3 × 16 = 48 oz, or six portions.

How to use it

  1. Enter the amount. A decimal like 1.75 lb or 40 oz is fine.
  2. Choose ounces to pounds or pounds to ounces.
  3. Read the answer, then use the table to see the nearby values side by side.

What the inputs mean

Value to convert
A weight in avoirdupois ounces (for oz → lb) or pounds (for lb → oz). Avoirdupois is the everyday system used for food, people and parcels.
Direction
Which way to convert. The table switches to match.

Formula and method

lb = oz ÷ 16
oz = lb × 16

Here lb is the weight in pounds and oz is the weight in ounces. The avoirdupois pound is divided into 16 ounces by definition, so the factor is exactly 16 in both directions. Dividing by 16 is the same as multiplying by 0.0625.

Because 16 is a power of two, many everyday amounts give tidy decimals: 4 oz = 0.25 lb, 8 oz = 0.5 lb, 12 oz = 0.75 lb.

Worked example

A recipe needs 24 oz of ground beef. How many pounds should you buy?

  1. Divide by 16, because every pound holds 16 ounces: 24 ÷ 16.
  2. Work it out: 24 ÷ 16 = 1.5.

Result: 24 oz is 1.5 lb, or 1 lb 8 oz.

Understanding the result

Mental shortcut: halve four times. 24 oz → 12 → 6 → 3 → 1.5 lb. Going the other way, double four times: 2.5 lb → 5 → 10 → 20 → 40 oz. Both are exact, not estimates.

Reading decimal pounds: the part after the decimal point is a fraction of a pound, not ounces. 7.5 lb is 7 lb 8 oz, because 0.5 × 16 = 8. To split any result, keep the whole pounds and multiply the remainder by 16.

Familiar amounts: a stick of butter is 4 oz (¼ lb), and a quarter-pound burger patty is 4 oz before cooking. A 12 oz bag of coffee is 0.75 lb, and 32 oz is exactly 2 lb.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Ounces and pounds are avoirdupois units, 16 ounces to the pound.
  • Troy weights use 12 troy ounces to the troy pound and are not handled here.
  • Fluid ounces measure volume and cannot be divided by 16 to get pounds.

Frequently asked questions

How many ounces are in a pound?

Exactly 16, for the ordinary avoirdupois pound used for food, people and parcels.

Is 1.5 lb the same as 1 lb 5 oz?

No. 1.5 lb is 1 lb 8 oz. The decimal 0.5 means half a pound, which is 8 ounces. 1 lb 5 oz would be 1.3125 lb.

Does a 16 oz bottle of water weigh a pound?

Almost, but only by coincidence. The 16 on the bottle is fluid ounces of volume. That much water weighs about 1.04 lb (16.7 oz), not counting the bottle.

Why do troy pounds have 12 ounces?

The troy system is a separate, older set of weights kept for precious metals. Its ounce is heavier and its pound lighter than the avoirdupois units, so the two systems should never be mixed.
