Step-by-step solution

  1. The official definition goes the other way: 1 ft is exactly 12 in

    1 ft=12 in
  2. So divide your inches by 12 to get feet

    72 in12=6 ft
  3. Or multiply by 0.0833333333333 instead. It gives the same answer, because 1 ÷ 12 ≈ 0.0833333333333

    72 in×0.0833333333333=6 ft

What this calculator does

Change inches to feet, or feet to inches, in a moment. Both units come from the same US system, so there's no metric step in between: a foot is exactly 12 inches. People still switch between them all the time. Heights, TV stands, room sizes and lumber often get quoted in one unit and measured in the other.

To change inches into feet, divide by 12. To change feet into inches, multiply by 12. The answer here is in decimal feet, so 66 in shows as 5.5 ft. The notes below show how to write that as 5 ft 6 in.

Where it's used

Why this math matters outside the classroom:

  • Height. Pediatric height charts record a child who is 52 in tall as 4 ft 4 in.
  • Lumber. Carpenters cutting from a 96 in board know they have exactly 8 ft of length to work with.
  • Shelf space. A 65 in wide shelf is 5 ft 5 in, or about 5.42 ft.
  • Snowfall. A storm that drops 30 in of snow has dropped 2.5 ft.
  • Room layouts. Students convert 3 ft 8 in to 44 in to subtract it from a 10 ft wall measured as 120 in.

How to use it

  1. Enter the number of inches, or the number of feet as a decimal.
  2. Pick inches → feet or feet → inches.
  3. Read the answer and the steps. The table lists common heights and lengths in both units.

What the inputs mean

Value to convert
A length in inches (in → ft) or decimal feet (ft → in). For 5 ft 9 in going to inches, enter 5.75 ft.
Direction
Choose the unit you have.

Formula and method

ft = in ÷ 12
in = ft × 12

In the formulas, ft is the length in feet and in is the length in inches. The foot has been split into 12 inches for centuries. Agreed definitions from 1959 kept that ratio and tied both units to the meter: 1 in = 2.54 cm and 1 ft = 30.48 cm.

Twelve divides evenly in many ways. So a quarter, a third and a half of a foot all come out as whole inches (3, 4 and 6). That's one reason the ratio has lasted.

Worked example

Someone is 72 inches tall. How many feet is that?

  1. Divide by 12 inches per foot: 72 ÷ 12.
  2. 72 ÷ 12 = 6.

Result: 72 inches is exactly 6 feet.

Understanding the result

To split decimal feet into feet and inches, keep the whole number as feet. Then multiply the decimal part by 12 to get the inches. For 5.75 ft: 5 ft plus 0.75 × 12 = 9 in, so 5 ft 9 in. Going the other way, 5 ft 9 in is 5 × 12 + 9 = 69 in.

Some common values: 30 in (a typical desk height) is 2.5 ft. 36 in is 3 ft, or one yard. 48 in is 4 ft, the width of a standard sheet of plywood, and 96 in is 8 ft, its length. A 64-inch person is 5 ft 4 in.

Watch out for this common slip: writing 5.10 ft for 5 ft 10 in. As decimal feet, 5.10 ft is only 5 ft 1.2 in; 5 ft 10 in is 5.8333 ft. Writing it with marks, 5′10″, avoids the mix-up.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Both are the standard international units: 1 ft = 12 in = 0.3048 m.
  • Values are plain lengths.
  • The answer is in decimal feet, not feet and inches. Use the rule above to split it.
  • Square inches to square feet uses 144, not 12. This page handles length only.

Frequently asked questions

How many inches are in a foot?

Exactly 12.

How many feet is 100 inches?

8.3333 ft, which is 8 ft 4 in.

How many square inches are in a square foot?

144, because a square foot is 12 in × 12 in. Area conversions always use the length number multiplied by itself.

What does a double prime (″) mean?

It marks inches, while a single prime (′) marks feet. So 6′2″ means 6 feet 2 inches, which is 74 in.
