  • Common Core standard 4.MD.A.1Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table.
  • Common Core standard 5.MD.A.1Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems.

What this calculator does

Turn miles into feet, or feet into miles, in one step. The statute mile is the everyday mile on US and UK roads, and the foot is its short-distance partner. You'll need the conversion for hiking elevation, trail lengths, property frontage and runways. It also helps anywhere a distance quoted in feet would be easier to picture in miles.

A mile is exactly 5,280 feet. That odd number is historical: the mile was fixed at 8 furlongs of 660 feet each. To turn miles into feet, multiply by 5,280. To turn feet into miles, divide by 5,280. Both are exact in customary terms. Both units are also tied to the meter through the international foot of 0.3048 m.

Where it's used

Why this math matters outside the classroom:

  • Running tracks. Four laps of a 1,320 ft quarter-mile track make one mile of 5,280 ft.
  • Trail planning. Hikers reading a park map see that a 2.5 mile trail is 13,200 ft long.
  • Visibility. A visibility report of 3 statute miles means 15,840 ft.
  • Road work. A 0.2 mile construction zone is 1,056 ft long.
  • Steps per mile. A walker with a 2.5 ft stride takes about 5,280 ÷ 2.5 = 2,112 steps per mile.

How to use it

  1. Enter the distance in miles or in feet.
  2. Choose miles → feet or feet → miles.
  3. Read the result and the working, or use the table for common distances.

What the inputs mean

Value to convert
A distance in statute miles (mi → ft) or feet (ft → mi).
Direction
Choose the unit you are starting from.

Formula and method

ft = mi × 5,280
mi = ft ÷ 5,280

In these formulas, ft is the distance in feet and mi is the distance in miles. 5,280 = 8 furlongs × 660 ft, which is also 1,760 yards × 3 ft. The ratio is exact.

Dividing feet by 5,280 usually gives a repeating decimal: 1,000 ft is 0.189393… mi.

Worked example

How many feet are in one mile?

  1. Multiply by 5,280, because every mile holds 5,280 feet: 1 × 5,280.
  2. 1 × 5,280 = 5,280.

Result: One mile is exactly 5,280 ft.

Understanding the result

A memory aid: "five tomatoes" sounds like five-two-eight-oh. For quick estimates, 5,000 ft per mile is 5.3% short. And 1,000 ft is a little under a fifth of a mile.

Reference values: a quarter mile, the classic drag-race distance, is 1,320 ft; a tenth of a mile, the smallest step on many trip odometers, is 528 ft; a 5K run (3.1 mi) is about 16,368 ft. An airliner cruising at 35,000 ft is about 6.63 mi above sea level, and 10,000 ft is 1.894 mi.

Pitfall: the nautical mile is not 5,280 ft. It is exactly 1,852 m, about 6,076.1 ft, and is used for marine and air navigation. Also, elevation gain on a hike is measured vertically, so 1,000 ft of climb says nothing about the trail's length.

Assumptions and limitations

  • The mile is the statute mile of 5,280 international feet.
  • Distances are horizontal or along the route, as given.
  • Nautical miles are not supported.
  • The US survey mile, used in some older land records, is about 2 parts per million longer; the difference is about a hundredth of a foot per mile.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a mile 5,280 feet and not a round number?

The English statute of 1593 set the mile at 8 furlongs, and a furlong was 660 ft, a length tied to farming. Multiplying gives 5,280, and the figure stuck.

How many miles is 10,000 feet?

1.8939 miles.

How many feet is half a mile?

2,640 ft.

How this calculator is checked

Method: Customary definition 1 mi = 8 furlongs = 1,760 yd = 5,280 ft; international foot 0.3048 m (1959). The calculation is covered by automated tests with known reference values and edge cases. Last updated 2026-10-18. Found a problem? Tell us.
