What this calculator does
Convert yards to meters, or meters to yards, with the exact factor. The yard is three feet, the customary unit for American football fields, golf course distances, fabric and carpet. The meter is the metric (SI) unit that replaced it in most countries. A yard is about 91% of a meter, close enough that people often treat them as the same. They are not, and the 9% gap adds up quickly over a pool length or a golf shot.
Since 1959 the international yard has been defined as exactly 0.9144 m; in fact the foot and inch are defined from it. Yards to meters is an exact multiplication by 0.9144, and meters to yards an exact division.
Where it's used
Why this math matters outside the classroom:
- Swimming. A 25 yd pool is 22.86 m long, shorter than a 25 m pool.
- Football. The 100 yd between goal lines is 91.44 m.
- Fabric. A pattern calling for 3 yd of fabric needs about 2.74 m from a metric shop.
- Golf. Golfers using a metric course guide know a 150 yd shot is about 137 m.
- Running tracks. Coaches comparing old yard-based records know a 400 m track lap is about 437 yd.

How to use it
- Enter a distance in yards or meters. Decimals are allowed.
- Choose yards → meters or meters → yards.
- Read the result and working, or look up common distances in the table.
What the inputs mean
- Value to convert
- A length in yards (yd → m) or meters (m → yd).
- Direction
- The unit your value is in.
Formula and method
m = yd × 0.9144 yd = m ÷ 0.9144 ≈ m × 1.09361329834
In the formulas, yd is the length in yards and m is the length in meters. 0.9144 m is the defining value of the international yard. Dividing it by 3 gives the foot (0.3048 m) and by 36 the inch (0.0254 m).
A meter is 1.0936133… yards, an endless decimal, so the calculator divides by 0.9144 for meters to yards.
Worked example
An American football field is 100 yards between the goal lines. How long is that in meters?
- Multiply by the exact factor, because each yard is 0.9144 m: 100 × 0.9144.
- 100 × 0.9144 = 91.44.
Result: 100 yd is 91.44 m. Including both 10-yard end zones, the 120 yd field is 109.728 m.
Understanding the result
Mental shortcut for m to yd: add 10%. 50 m becomes 55 yd against an exact 54.68 yd, about 0.6% high. For yd to m, subtract 10%: 100 yd → 90 m, exact 91.44 m (1.6% low); subtracting 8.5% is closer.
Reference values: a 25-yard swimming pool is 22.86 m, so swimmers' times in yard pools and meter pools are not directly comparable; a 25 m pool is 27.34 yd. A 400 m track lap is 437.45 yd, and 1,500 m is 1,640.42 yd. A mile is exactly 1,760 yd.
Pitfall: square and cubic yards are different conversions. A square yard is 0.83612736 m², and a cubic yard of soil or concrete is about 0.7646 m³, not 0.9144.
Assumptions and limitations
- The yard is the international yard, exactly 0.9144 m.
- Values are straight-line lengths.
- Square and cubic yards are not handled here; use the area or volume converters.
- Historical imperial yards before 1959 differed from 0.9144 m by a few parts per million.
Frequently asked questions
Is a yard longer than a meter?
No. A yard is 0.9144 m, about 8.6 cm shorter than a meter.
How many yards are in 100 meters?
109.3613 yd, so a 100 m sprint is a little over 109 yards.
Why do golf courses measure in yards?
It is a convention from the game's British and American history. Many courses in metric countries now post both; to convert a 150-yard shot, multiply by 0.9144 to get 137.16 m.
