Turn a mixed number such as 2 3/4 into a single (improper) fraction, or back again, including negatives, with the working shown.

Level: Grades 4–5

  • Common Core standard 4.NF.B.3.bDecompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way, recording each decomposition by an equation. Justify decompositions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
  • Common Core standard 5.NF.B.3Interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator (a/b = a ÷ b). Solve word problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem.

Step-by-step solution

  1. Multiply the whole number by the bottom number (denominator). This counts the wholes as pieces of the same size

    2×4=8
  2. Add the top number (numerator) to get the new top number. The bottom number stays the same

    2×4+34=114
  3. The mixed number as an improper fraction

    2 3/4=114

What this calculator does

Switch between a mixed number like 2 3/4 and a single fraction like 11/4, with every step shown. A mixed number is a whole number plus a fraction: 2 3/4 means two wholes and three quarters more. An improper fraction writes the same amount as one fraction with a top number at least as big as the bottom one, like 11/4. The top number is the numerator, and the bottom one is the denominator. Mixed numbers are easier to picture. Improper fractions are easier to multiply, divide and use in formulas.

This converter works in both directions. To turn a mixed number into an improper fraction, it multiplies and adds. To go back, it divides and keeps the remainder (what's left over). It simplifies along the way, and it handles negative values the way textbooks do.

Where it's used

Why this math matters outside the classroom:

  • Doubling recipes. A baker converts 2 3/4 cups of flour to 11/4 so it can be doubled to 22/4, which is 5 1/2 cups.
  • Lumber lengths. A carpenter measuring 3 5/8 in writes it as 29/8 so it can be multiplied or divided cleanly.
  • Sharing pizza. Four friends sharing 7 pizzas equally each get 7/4 = 1 3/4 pizzas.
  • Running laps. A runner who completes 9 quarter-mile laps has run 9/4 = 2 1/4 miles.
  • Cutting fabric. A tailor who needs 5 1/3 yards of cloth writes it as 16/3 to see that 16 one-third-yard pieces cover it.

How to use it

  1. Choose which way you're converting.
  2. For a mixed number, enter the whole part, the numerator and the denominator. Tick 'Negative mixed number' if the whole value is below zero.
  3. For an improper fraction, enter the numerator and denominator. Either one can be negative.
  4. Read the converted value, its decimal value, and the steps that got there.

What the inputs mean

Negative mixed number
Makes the entire mixed number negative, so −2 3/4 means −(2 + 3/4), not −2 + 3/4.
Whole number
The whole-number part, 0 or more. Use 0 for a value with no whole part.
Numerator
The top number of the fraction part, 0 or more. If it's as big as the denominator, the result is still correct, and the standard mixed form is shown too.
Denominator
The bottom number of the fraction part, a whole number greater than 0.

Formula and method

w n/d = (w × d + n) / d
−(w n/d) = −(w × d + n) / d
a/d: w = floor(|a| ÷ d), r = |a| − w × d, so a/d = ± w r/d

Here w is the whole part, n is the numerator and d is the denominator of the fraction part. In the last line, a is the numerator of the improper fraction and r is the remainder. floor means round down to a whole number, and |a| means a without its minus sign.

Each whole is worth d pieces of size 1/d, so w wholes are w × d pieces. Add the n extra pieces to get the numerator of the improper fraction. The piece size, the denominator, stays the same.

Going the other way, divide the numerator by the denominator. The answer (the quotient) counts how many wholes fit. The remainder is the number of pieces left over, and it becomes the new numerator. The calculator simplifies the fraction first, so the fraction part is already in lowest terms.

A minus sign belongs to the whole value. The calculator converts the value without its sign, then puts the sign back. That's why −11/4 becomes −2 3/4.

Worked example

A board is 2 3/4 feet long, and you need it as a single fraction to divide it into pieces.

  1. Multiply the whole part by the denominator: 2 × 4 = 8 quarter-feet.
  2. Add the numerator: 8 + 3 = 11.
  3. Keep the denominator: 11/4.
  4. Check by converting back: 11 = 2 × 4 + 3, so 11/4 = 2 3/4.

Result: 2 3/4 = 11/4, which is 2.75 as a decimal. Converting the other way, 17/5 = 3 2/5 because 17 = 3 × 5 + 2.

Understanding the result

An improper fraction isn't wrong. It's often the preferred form in algebra, because it combines neatly with other fractions.

When an improper fraction divides evenly, the mixed form is just a whole number (12/4 = 3). When the numerator is smaller than the denominator, there's no whole part. The result is the fraction itself (a proper fraction).

Assumptions and limitations

  • Inputs are whole numbers. You enter the fraction part of a mixed number as a separate numerator and denominator.
  • Results are simplified to lowest terms, with a positive denominator.
  • Mixed-number parts are limited to 10,000,000, and improper fractions to 1,000,000,000,000 in size. That keeps every value exact.
  • This tool converts single values. To add or multiply fractions, use the fraction calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How is a negative mixed number converted?

Convert the positive version, then make the result negative. −1 3/4 is −(1 × 4 + 3)/4 = −7/4. A common slip is to work out −1 × 4 + 3 = −1, which gives the wrong answer −1/4.

Can the fraction part of a mixed number be improper, like 2 5/4?

It isn't standard, but the value still makes sense: 2 5/4 = 13/4. The calculator gives that result and also shows the standard form, 3 1/4.

Why convert to an improper fraction before multiplying?

Multiplying mixed numbers part by part gives the wrong answer, because (2 + 1/2) × (2 + 1/2) is not 4 + 1/4. Converting to 5/2 × 5/2 = 25/4 = 6 1/4 avoids the mistake.
