What this calculator does
Convert US tons to pounds, or pounds to tons, in one step. In the United States a ton means the short ton of 2,000 pounds. It is the unit for truck and trailer ratings, bulk deliveries of gravel, mulch or topsoil, air-conditioner capacity names, scrap-metal prices and hay. Pounds are the unit on the scale ticket. So contractors, farmers and anyone ordering material by the load switch between tons and pounds all the time.
The short ton is exactly 2,000 avoirdupois pounds (the everyday pound on US scales). So tons to pounds means multiplying by 2,000, and pounds to tons means dividing by 2,000. This page converts in either direction and shows the step.
Where it's used
Why this math matters outside the classroom:
- Bridge limits. A bridge posted at 10 tons limits vehicles to 20,000 lb.
- Gravel loads. Truck drivers checking axle limits know a 3 ton load of gravel weighs 6,000 lb.
- Long tons. A British long ton is 2,240 lb, 240 lb more than a US short ton.
- Metric tonnes. A metric tonne of 1,000 kg is about 2,204.6 lb.
- Recycling. A recycling center that pays by the ton records a 650 lb load as 0.325 tons.

How to use it
- Enter the weight in tons (decimals such as 1.25 are fine) or in pounds.
- Choose tons to pounds or pounds to tons.
- Read the result and use the table for typical load sizes.
What the inputs mean
- Value to convert
- A weight in US short tons (for ton → lb) or in pounds (for lb → ton).
- Direction
- Which way to convert. The reference table changes to match.
Formula and method
lb = short tons × 2,000 short tons = lb ÷ 2,000
Here lb means pounds, and short tons means US tons of 2,000 lb each.
The short ton is 2,000 lb by definition. The pound is 0.45359237 kg, so a short ton is also exactly 907.18474 kg.
Dividing pounds by 2,000 is the same as halving and moving the decimal point three places: 5,000 lb → 2,500 → 2.5 tons.
Worked example
A landscaping supplier quotes 2 tons of crushed stone. How many pounds is that?
- 1 short ton = 2,000 lb exactly.
- 2 × 2,000 = 4,000.
Result: 2 tons is 4,000 lb.
Understanding the result
Mental shortcut: tons × 2 gives thousands of pounds. 1.5 tons is 3 thousand pounds, 3,000 lb. For pounds to tons, halve the thousands: 7,000 lb is 3.5 tons. These are exact, not approximations.
Three different tons: the US short ton is 2,000 lb (907.18 kg); the imperial long ton, still seen in British contexts and ship displacement, is 2,240 lb (1,016.05 kg); the metric tonne is 1,000 kg, about 2,204.62 lb. A long ton is 12% heavier than a short ton, and a tonne is about 10% heavier. Always check which one a figure uses.
"Ton" in air-conditioning is not a weight. A ton of cooling is a rate of heat removal (12,000 BTU per hour), named after the ice-melting capacity of a ton of ice per day. Do not convert it to pounds.
Assumptions and limitations
- "Ton" means the US short ton of exactly 2,000 lb.
- Long tons and metric tonnes are not selectable here; use the weight converter for those.
- Material quotes by volume (cubic yards) need the material's density before they can be stated in tons.
Frequently asked questions
How many pounds are in a ton?
2,000 lb in a US short ton. A British long ton is 2,240 lb, and a metric tonne is about 2,204.62 lb.
Is a tonne the same as a ton?
No. A tonne (metric ton) is 1,000 kg, about 2,204.6 lb, which is roughly 10% more than a US ton. Shipping and international trade figures are usually in tonnes.
How many tons is 80,000 pounds?
Exactly 40 short tons, since 80,000 ÷ 2,000 = 40.
