How Alabama taxes your paycheck
This page estimates the Alabama income tax taken from your pay in 2026. Alabama has three rates: 2%, 4% and 5%. Most workers reach the 5% rate quickly.
For single filers, 5% applies to taxable income over $3,000. For married couples filing jointly, it starts over $6,000. Before the rates, you subtract a standard deduction that shrinks as income rises. You also subtract a personal exemption of $1,500, or $3,000 for joint filers and heads of family.
Alabama also lets you deduct the federal income tax you paid, and this calculator includes that. For example, a single person earning $60,000 owes about $5,020 in 2026 federal income tax. After that, the deduction and the exemption, about $50,980 is taxable, for about $2,509 of Alabama tax.

What this estimate leaves out
- The federal income tax deduction uses this calculator's federal estimate for the year. Your return uses the federal tax actually owed, which can differ.
- The standard deduction chart works in $500 steps ($250 separate). This estimate shrinks it smoothly instead, so it can differ from the chart by up to $175.
- The dependent exemption is $1,000 each at AGI up to $50,000 and $300 each above $100,000. This estimate uses the middle amount of $500.
- Uses the 2025 standard deduction chart and exemptions; Alabama sets these in state law and had not published 2026 forms when checked.
- Local occupational taxes are not included.
Frequently asked questions
What are the Alabama income tax rates for 2026?
Alabama taxes the first $500 of taxable income at 2%, the next $2,500 at 4% and the rest at 5%. For married couples filing jointly, the steps are $1,000 and $5,000.
Can I deduct federal income tax on my Alabama return?
Yes. Alabama is one of the few states that lets you subtract the federal income tax you paid. This calculator subtracts its own estimate of your federal income tax for the year.
What is the Alabama standard deduction for 2026?
It depends on your income. Single filers get up to $3,000 and joint filers up to $8,500. Once Alabama AGI reaches $35,500, it bottoms out at $2,500 single or $5,000 joint.
Is there local income tax in Alabama?
In some places, yes. Cities such as Birmingham, Bessemer and Gadsden charge an occupational tax on wages earned there. This estimate covers only the state tax.
Does Alabama tax 401(k) contributions?
No. Traditional 401(k) and 403(b) contributions come out of your pay before Alabama income tax, so they lower your Alabama taxable income.
