How Mississippi taxes your paycheck

Mississippi doesn't tax the first $10,000 of your taxable income. In 2026, everything above that is taxed at 4%, down from 4.4% in 2025.

Before that, you subtract a standard deduction and an exemption. A single person takes off $2,300 and $6,000. A married couple takes off $4,600 and $12,000, plus $1,500 for each dependent. Mississippi has no state disability or paid leave deduction, and no city income tax.

For example, a single person earns $60,000 and puts $3,000 in a 401(k) and $2,000 toward health insurance. Mississippi taxes $46,700. The first $10,000 is free, so the tax is 4% of $36,700, or $1,468 for the year.

What this estimate leaves out

  • Married couples may file a combined return that figures each spouse's tax separately, which can give each spouse their own untaxed $10,000. This estimate treats a joint return as one.
  • Extra $1,500 exemptions for filers who are 65 or older or blind.
  • Itemized deductions, and credits such as the credit for taxes paid to another state.
