How Massachusetts taxes your paycheck
Massachusetts taxes wages at one flat rate of 5%. A 4% surtax applies only to taxable income above $1,107,750 in 2026, so very few paychecks see it.
There is no standard deduction. Instead you get a personal exemption: $4,400 if single, $8,800 for a married couple filing jointly, and $6,800 for a head of household. Each dependent adds $1,000. Your paycheck also shows a Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) deduction of up to 0.46% of wages.
Here's an example. A single person earns $60,000 and puts $3,000 in a 401(k) and $2,000 toward health insurance. The state taxes $50,600, so the tax is $2,530. PFML takes about $266.80 more, for $2,796.80 in all. This is an estimate, not your exact bill.

What this estimate leaves out
- The deduction for Social Security and Medicare taxes you paid, up to $2,000 per person. Most full-time workers get the full $2,000, which lowers state tax by about $100.
- Low-income relief: the 'no tax status' and the limited income credit.
- Credits such as the child and family tax credit, the Massachusetts earned income credit, and deductions such as the rent deduction.
- Employers can choose to pay some or all of your PFML share, so your actual deduction may be lower than 0.46%.
- Short-term capital gains (8.5%) and collectibles (12%) are taxed at other rates; this estimate covers wages only.
Frequently asked questions
What is the PFML deduction on my Massachusetts paycheck?
It pays for the state's Paid Family and Medical Leave program. In 2026 your employer can take up to 0.46% of your wages for it. It stops once your pay for the year reaches $184,500. Some employers pay part or all of it for you.
Does Massachusetts tax 401(k) contributions?
No. Traditional 401(k) and 403(b) contributions come out before the 5% tax, the same as on your federal return. Roth contributions are taxed as normal pay.
Who pays the Massachusetts millionaire surtax?
Only people whose taxable income is over $1,107,750 in 2026. The extra 4% applies just to the part above that line. The threshold is the same for married couples filing jointly as for single filers.
Is there local income tax in Massachusetts?
No. Cities and towns in Massachusetts don't charge an income tax. The 5% state tax and the PFML deduction are the only state items on your paycheck.
